22-Nov-06 - Anna will be on the judging panel for the British Independent Film Awards which will take place in at Hammersmith Palais in London on 29 November. Also on the panel are Sandy Lieberson, Reuben Barnes, Martin Childs, Anne V Coates, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Alan Cumming, Leo Davis, Jason Isaacs, Mick Jones, Damian Lewis, Helen McCrory, Damien O’Donnell, Kelly Reilly, Martin Sherman and Colin Salmon.

Degree of success for talented twosome

RADIO presenter Sarah Cox and actress Anna Friel will receive honorary doctorates from Bolton University.The Radio 1 and television presenter, who is from Bolton, will be honoured for her contribution to broadcasting. Rochdale-born TV and film actress Friel, who first gained success in Brookside, is being awarded for her contribution to the performing arts.

Prof James Calderwood, the university's public orator, said: "Entertainment plays a prominent part in our lives and those working in the media carry a corresponding responsibility. "They both give significant services to entertainment and both have strong links with Bolton."

The doctorates will be conferred by Dr George Holmes, the university's vice-chancellor, at a ceremony on Friday. Around 250 graduating students will also attend, bringing the number of students who have graduated from the university this year to 2,500.

11-Oct-06 - After years of searching, I'm very close to receiving an official promotional copy of "The Tribe" on DVD. Of course screengrabs added here first !! There are quite a few inferior copies that can be found across the net (and sold for ridiculous prices considering they have no legal ownership on Poliakoff's work...)

On a lighter note, Anna appears on the cover of November's edition of "Essentials" magazine with an interview inside (Goal 2 promotion full steam ahead...)

21-Sept-06 - Hot on the heels of acquiring a promotional VHS copy of "Watermelon", I have managed to acquire a rare (?) DVD copy of the film, so some nice new screengrabs to be added soon....

11-Sept-06 - As well as Anna completing filming on "Goal 2" and "Bathory" (a film about the real life and deeds of Countess Elizabeth Bathory), it now appears "Goal 3" is in pre-production. Possibly Anna has also signed up to appear with John Hurt and Helen Mirren in a World War 1 film called "Angel Makers"... confirmation and more details to follow....

01-Apr-06 - "Irish Jam" got a very quiet release to DVD in Canada/US recently. It can be purchased through some online DVD stores including the one named after a river. It features 2 songs sung by Anna ("My Love Will Carry You" & "Sweet Morning Dew"), and co-written by her father, Des - very nice songs they are, and they show how good Anna's voice actually is...

The time grows closer to when the site at this location will disappear and there will be a redirect to the new URL as above - yes, I now have registered annafriel.org and with a major redesign and masses of extra pictures, data and info, hopefully will be able to provide a more comprehensive and better updated site. Over the coming months there will hopefully be additional features like notice boards, forums, streaming video (if I can get my Flash programming knowledge updated !!) and much more....

Yes very soon this site will be moving to a brand new location... its all being set up now and hopefully within the next week or so , we will have a new web home with lots more data and pictures and allsorts...... the design will eventually change and evolve... plus maybe 1 or 2 special items.... more to follow.....

19-Feb-06 "Niagara Motel" released on DVD (R2) tomorrow - for those who never saw it on its limited run at select cinemas check out the usual DVD shops or online stores - can be found for very good prices... (Trailer and some interviews with cast are additional features)

In Niagara Motel, a group of struggling individuals cross paths at a low-rent motel in the tourist Mecca of Niagara Falls. They are not tourists and they are all, for various reasons, at crisis points in their lives.

The main characters are: a knockout waitress being recruited to star in low budget porn videos, a young couple with criminal pasts struggling to recover their child from social services, and a middle class husband and wife whose marriage is disintegrating. The story also includes the woeful drunken motel manager, a prostitute working to support two children, a small time hustler, an underachieving staple salesman, the Serbian owner of the motel, his physics studying daughter, and a social worker with a Christian bias.

The needs of these people, their obvious failings and the unlucky conditions of their lives make them so vulnerable that they careen from the disturbing to the hilarious in a breathless instant. In this story, tragedy waltzes with unpredictable comedy in an intense dance of life.
